  • Staircase House Trip

    Sat 21 Oct 2023

What a fantastic day we had learning all about The Great Fire of London!๐Ÿคฉ

Throughout the day, we completed lots of different activities to support us in developing our knowledge on The Great Fire of London. We focused on:

๐Ÿ”ฅRetelling the story of The Great Fire of London within the 17th century rooms at Staircase House.
๐Ÿ”ฅDressing up and getting involved in role play finding out where, when and why the fire broke out.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Exploring what Samuel Pepys wrote about the fire and find out what an eye witness it.

During the afternoon, we learnt all about the fire marks in London in 1666 and learnt their meaning. We then spent some time creating our own fire marks. It was important that they were colourful so they could be seen. Year 2 did a fabulous job!โœจ

We also focused on what material the houses were made out of in London in 1666. We learnt that the houses were made from wattle and daub. We used clay to represent the daub. All the children worked hard to weave the wattle and mould the clay (daub) to ensure there were no gaps. They understood that by having no gaps this would stop the wind and raining coming through. Year 2 learnt that the fire spread quickly because the houses were made out of these materials. Everyone did an amazing job!๐Ÿ”ฅ

Year 2 were fantastic all day and the ladies at Staircase House commented on their politeness, behaviour and enthusiasm to learn new facts. Well done Year 2- we are so proud of you!๐Ÿ’›

  • Stoneage Workshop

    Mon 16 Oct 2023

Today, we have had a fantastic time taking part in our Stone Age workshop.

๐Ÿ“We started the workshop with a bone investigation, and we examined lots of Stones Age artefacts such as the tools they used and materials they used in order to survive.

๐Ÿ“We created our very own arrows using flint arrowheads and wood.

๐Ÿ“We all took part in drawing our very own cave drawings on slate using charcoal and chalk.

๐Ÿ“This afternoon, we took part in learning about key hunting techniques from the Stone Age such as archery. All children practised their archery skills by trying to hunt the animals like they would have done during the Stone Age.

It has been a fantastic fun-filled day, and all of the children enjoyed it!

  • Year 4 Fire Safety Trip

    Tue 10 Oct 2023

Wow! Year 4 have had a fantastic and very informative day today at Bury fire training station. This was lead by two fantastic fire men. The children had the opportunity to experience many activities such as how fire workers help people and how to keep safe in dangerous situations. They experienced answering 999 calls and how to administer CPR. They looked at identifying dangers within the home and how to avoid these happening. These were all delivered in realistic settings. It was quite the experience.

It was fantastic to see 2 year 4 girls representing the team, playing up 2 years and not only that setting the standard. Great performance - well done girls!

  • Art visit to The Westleigh School

    Thu 28 Sep 2023

Our children were invited to take part in an art class at The Westleigh School and get a feel for what art lessons are like in Year 7. They looked at an art style used by the artist Iain MacArthur, who has created zentangle animal artwork. We used oil pastels to create a base for our colour and then we used different shapes and marks to create patterns that would transfer onto our paper. We used a biro pen to press our patterns firmly onto one side of our paper. Once the pattern work was finished we looked at the colourful patterns we had created.

The children were superb: they worked hard, tried their best and represented our school brilliantly.

  • RHS Bridgewater Y6

    Mon 26 Jun 2023

We had a great day at RHS Bridgewater. We spent the morning exploring the gardens and admiring the beautiful plants and flowers. The children worked in pairs to identify different blossoms, trees and leaves as well as using the iPads to capture some images that we will use as part of some science themed artwork over the next few weeks.

We then moved to the woodland play we here the children worked in small teams to create dens. It was great to see the communication skills and sharing of ideas as they built their constructions.

After lunch we had a workshop where we investigated plants. The children reviewed what they had previously learnt at schools before using magnifying glasses and microscopes to look closely at different parts of the plant that are used in reproduction. The children then made clones of a mint plant that we have brought back to school and will hopefully see prosper over the next few weeks.

We ended the day with a final tour of the garden and then finished with some time in the woodland play area.

    Overall a great day!

First of all we had a chat about different plants that are grown on the farm and what we use them for. We learnt about wheat, oil seed rape, oats and barley. ๐ŸŒพ ๐Ÿšœ

After that we went on a walk through different parts of the farm looking at some of the fruits and vegetables that grow there. We looked at pumpkins, apple trees, cherry trees, plum trees, tayberries, raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants and strawberries!! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ“

After a quick shade break and drink break we went to the strawberry tunnels to pick some strawberries. The children thoroughly enjoyed picking their own strawberries!

๐Ÿ’ซWe were blown away by the children’s behaviour today and this was commented on by lots of the public. What a credit to St John’s you are! ๐Ÿ’ซ
